This is just the return of the sticker for highly polluting cars. The budget bill amendment introduced Wednesday by the Council of Ministers provides an annual environmental surcharge on cars emitting more than 250 grams of CO2 per kilometer. This measure, which was part of the commitments of the Grenelle of the environment, will be implemented from 1 January 2009.The amount of this new penalty will be 160 euros per year. It should cover about 1% of vehicles on the French market. Large 4 x 4 are the main targets: the Volkswagen Touareg gasoline (317 to 450 grams of CO2 per km), the Porsche Cayenne (310 to 361 g) and the BMW X5 4.8 i (355 g). Among the French new car market at the moment, four models will be affected by this penalty: the Citroen C6 V6 petrol (266 grams) and three Renault Espace and Grand Espace 3.5 petrol (284 and 289 gr) and the Vel Satis equipped with the same engine (275 gr).
The bonus-malus maintained classic
For other models of the market, the system of no-claims bonus to purchase a car is maintained. The current system provides a bonus (in force since early 2008) for new vehicles emitting less than 130 grams, up to 1 000, and a penalty for those emitting more than 160 CO2/km.
