The final version of the future USB 3.0, USB superspeed known, has been arrested. Indeed, it is a first armada of specifications that it is still version 1.0. And should evolve further. But the main specifications are known. The announcement was made during the event WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference) 2008 by Jeff Ravencraft, the president of the USB-IF. Key information was known last year, but now we know more about the dates for the arrival on the market for USB 3.0.
USB 3.0 is backward compatible with devices that accept USB 2.0 and must achieve a theoretical speed of 4800 Gbit / s or 600 Mb / s. To reach such a speed, copper and Optical fiber is used to dial the connection.
USB 3.0 should enable devices to receive a bandwidth 10 times greater than its previous version, USB 2.0, which tops out at 480 Mb / s (see chart).
A speed which makes it the first competitor to the standard promoted by Apple FireWire. In its version called FireWire 800, this standard offers speeds of 70 Mbps, equivalent to USB 2. But the standard will evolve to flow closer to the USB 3 in the near future.
Meanwhile, the UWB standard, a USB wireless, a time considered the future of connectivity, it should be abandoned by Intel. The company announced that it stopped research in this area.
The future therefore seems route for USB 3.0. However, there is no indication that the old operating systems such as Windows XP, still widely used, support this new standard. Microsoft has merely explain that Vista support this new protocol connection.
Finally, proponents of this future standard that will ensure better management of energy saving.
