The European digital library Europeans, will be launched Thursday November 20, said Monday Viviane Reding, European Commissioner responsible for Information Society and Media Forum "in Avignon on culture and the economy.
Available in 21 languages, the site europeana.eu propose more than two million digital cultural objects for the launch. France is the main contributor with 52% of works available. "This is an unprecedented collaboration between several hundred cultural institutions of the European Union. The goal is to reach or even exceed 10 million cultural objects by 2010," she said.
Yet only 1% of the content of national libraries in Europe is scanned. This figure should rise to 4% by 2012.
A budget of 120 million euros
"Europeana allow such access to works of French literature (manuscripts of Zola, Balzac), the digital reproduction of a Rembrandt self authenticated by the Rjiksmuseum in Amsterdam, maps held by the library or Slovenian yet to Hungarian music "
It took at least three years "to achieve this result. "This project has also helped to make national archives online compatible, and thus move towards a European knowledge," recalled the Commissioner at the launch in France of Digital Focus.
The Commission has allocated a budget of nearly 120 million euros to help countries return to their objectives, the years 2009 and 2010.
69 million will come from the Framework Program of the European Union, to specifically scan activities and development of national digital library. The remaining amount, 50 million will be provided by the Competitiveness and Innovation, and will be allocated to improving access to European cultural content.
But it will have to find other sources of funding for national libraries: the total cost of digitization of five million books from European libraries is already estimated at around 225 million euros, excluding works as paintings or manuscripts, "said the European Commission.
